Google Ads for Beginners guide showing campaign setup, keyword bidding, and Quality Score

What is Google Ads?

Google Ads is an advertising platform that lets you show ads on Google Search, YouTube, and millions of partner websites. You pay only when someone interacts with your ad — usually by clicking it.

What types of Google Ads campaigns are there?

There are several campaign types to choose from depending on your goal:

  • Search campaigns — text ads shown in Google search results.
  • Display campaigns — image ads shown on websites and apps.
  • Video campaigns — ads shown on YouTube.
  • Shopping campaigns — product listings shown in search results.

How does keyword bidding work?

You choose keywords related to your business, and set a bid — the maximum amount you're willing to pay per click. Google then runs an auction each time someone searches that keyword, factoring in your bid and your ad quality.

What is Quality Score?

Quality Score is Google's rating (1–10) of how relevant and useful your ad is to someone searching. It's based on expected click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience. A higher Quality Score can lower your cost per click.

How do I launch my first ad?

  1. Create a Google Ads account.
  2. Choose your campaign goal (e.g. website traffic, leads, sales).
  3. Select a campaign type (Search is best for beginners).
  4. Pick relevant keywords for your business.
  5. Write your ad headline and description.
  6. Set your daily budget and launch.

Start small — even a $5–10 daily budget is enough to learn how the platform responds to your keywords and ad copy before scaling up.
